The doctor evaluated Sara this morning and declared that her breathing tube could go, so they extubated her this morning. Sara immediately responded positively. The first words coming weakly out of her mouth were “can I have a Sprite right now?” Everyone in the room laughed out loud. Unfortunately, she can only have ice chips for a while, but the big reward of an ice cold Sprite is right around the corner. Sometimes those little things in life take on real significance.
Sara is slowly improving. Her incision is still bleeding a bit inside and out and her abdominal drains are still producing blood, so she is getting another blood infusion and platelets to improve clotting and resolve the resulting issues from continued bleeding. The next few days are focused on getting her to move around in bed, as she has atrophied more than you might expect from a week lying motionless in bed. She won’t get out of the ICU until she is a bit more stable medically and can move around. Pain is the continuing elephant in the room. Sara can’t get too many pain meds as they paralyze the new bowel, but not enough and her vitals go off the chart.
Keep those prayers coming for the bleeding to cease. That is the remaining unresolved issue...m2

Hooray for extubation!!! That definitely requires celebration! The little things in life are quite frequently the most important and most meaningful things, so I'm hoping Sara can get that Sprite soon.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear that the bleeding hasn't gotten under control yet, so I will be sending as many clotting vibes that way as I can.
The atrophy situation is always surprising - it definitely happens very rapidly, but I have total faith that Sara can build up her strength just as quickly.
Happy Texas Independence Day!

Dear Sara, Sheri, and Marc,
ReplyDeleteI am praying right now that the bleeding will stop, that the pain will be managed perfectly so she can bear it, supreme wisdom for the medical team, and that the Sprite will be coming soon!
Also, as always, I pray for strength, hope, and that you all can feel God's loving arms around you. THANK YOU for the updates! We have many people praying!
Much love,
