balancing act

Sara is back in the hospital again for a while. She has been feeling very bad for the last week, and a biopsy on Monday revealed that she has a viral infection in her bowel, which makes treating the rejection (still present) very difficult. Rejection treatment requires immunosuppressant drugs, but the viral infection is only effectively treated by the patient's immune system which cannot do its job with the immunosuppressant therapy. Fighting both at the same time is a balancing act with losing the bowel on one extreme or having a life-threatening infection on the other. Sara is caught in the middle and feels very sick right now. The doctors are treating her as best they can, and keeping her under close observation until this plays out...m2
